British Motorsport Legend Sir Stirling Moss Dies at Age 90

British motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss has kicked the bucket at age 90 after battling with a long illness.

Stirling Moses was widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, although he did not win the World Championship.
The lagend retired from public life in January 2018 because he had health issues.
"It was one lap too many, he just closed his eyes," said his wife Lady Moss.

Moss previously spent 134 days in hospital after battling with chest infection while on holiday in Singapore in December 2016.

His often reckless attitude negatively impacted his slight body. His career had ended early, at age 31, after a terrible crash left him in a coma for a month in April 1962.

By then, Moss already won 16 of the 66 F1 races he entered and established a reputation as a technically excellent and versatile F1 driver across many racing categories.

Arguably his greatest achievement was victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia race, which is a 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometre) road race through Italy by nearly half an hour over Juan Manuel Fangio, the Argentine great who was Moss' idol, teammate and rival.

An F1 title didn't follow, though a travesty to many in motorsport. Moss finished second in the drivers' championship four times in (1955-58) and third on three occasions.

Moss retired from public life in January 2018 because of health issues arising from a bronchial infection he picked up on a trip to Singapore in 2016.

Tributes to Moss have flooded in after his death, with reigning world F1 champion Lewis Hamilton taking to social media to salute a ‘”racing legend” and sending condolences to his friends and family.
Jean Todt, president of world governing body, the FIA, tweeted: “Very sad day. Stirling Moss left us after a long fight. He was a true legend in motor sport and will remain so forever.”

Ferrari also tweeted: “RIP Sir Stirling. A true legend and a wonderful person. To Ferrari, he was a formidable opponent. Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends.”
